Summary:

There are several stories in which Harry or Snape get thrown into an alternative reality or dimension, and they have to adjust to an entirely different role, and relationship.

I have yet to read a story in which someone else is the one who gets thrown into canon. So, I've decided to write this challenge...

Challenge

Happens at the beginning of OotP, in the summer before Fifth Year. After that, you're free to "stick to canon", or make up your own plot for that year.
The "other dimension" has to be different than canon, "more positive", but not insanely different. Harry might not be the Boy-Who-Lived, but things like Tom M. Riddle being a "cheerful Minister of Magic" cannot be possible.
Other!Snape and Other!Harry are not related by blood, but they are father and son (by adoption).
The dimension traveler wants to "fix" Snape and Harry's relationship by helping them understand each other.

Suggestions

I lifted the "obligation" that the dimension traveler be Lily, but I strongly suggest it. You get to chose it, though. It could even be James Potter.

You can bring up the Dursleys.

Restrictions

No Snape in a slash relationship.
No Snape with a student relationship.
The dimension traveler has to be a canon character who is currently dead in the timeframe where the story takes place.
No overly nice canon!Snape.
No overly timid canon!Harry. (Especially if this takes place in OotP.)
No overly abusive Dursleys. Neglect, isolation, and deprivation of food only. No beatings or rape.

Summary: Harry's Aunt and Uncle die, leaving both himself and his cousin Dudley without any guardians. They experience some sort of temporary living arrangement, such as Muggle or ministry custody, brief foster parents, or living on their own before finally ending up in the custody of Severus Snape. How much of a struggle was it to get both of them and how did he do it? Do they want to go?

Does this experience help Harry and Dudley bond, or do they hate each other even more after Petunia and Vernon's deaths? How does Dudley take being in the magical world?

Both Dudley and Harry experience an abusive environment together.
Someone runs away (Doesn't have to be Harry or Dudley).
One of the boys gets in trouble with the Muggle authorities.
Dudley stands up for someone being physically bullied.
Ron Weasley turns one of the boys in when they do something wrong.
Dudley is thought to be crazy when he mentions Magic to Muggles.
Dudley tries to do Magic.
Harry finds out that he is allergic to something.

Summary: Harry accidentally on purpose misses the train home after the tournament in 4th year. Snape fetches him from the station and bring him back to Hogwarts. Snape wonders why Harry is not upset for missing the train home to his relatives. You can come up with how long Harry stays at Hogwarts, if he ever leaves. How does Snape (if he finds out) react to Harry's hints of his home life? Does Snape Legilimentize Harry?
