I don't know how the number of readers/members differs from HPFandom, but they recently had a funding drive and managed to collect enough to host their site for two years by using a donate button on their front page.

Yeah, set up a donate button guys so we can start donating ASAP. Then as soon as you get the funds you can get us transfered over. Also, after thinking about it, I decided I would not be opposed to small ads on the home page. You do realize though that most ad companies such as AdWords work only when people actually click on the ads? And you're not technically allowed to ask people to click on them according to the AdWords TOS.

Er. I have, literally, no money, but I will try to think of ways to make some money and donate. Got my thinkin' cap on and you guys have been great to me, so, I want to help out as much as I can.

Combining techniques would seem to be the best solution; members who have the finances and ability to donate may do so and a consistent stream of revenue would be generated by the ads. As long as P&S doesn't become horribly riddled with ads I have no problem them, especially if they will earn money for the site. - Velesia on 14 Aug 2011 6:17 pm
I have a great idea. Start a free blogger.com blog and tie it to this site via a link. Make the blog specifically a place for improving writers writing. Writers can submit articles to the moderators at this site who can look them over and decide if they're valid, and then compile a list of helpful articles about how to improve writing. We'd all benefit from that. But the best part is you could start up a google adsense account and enable adwords on the blog. Then ads would be on the blog but not the actual site. If members just clicked on the ads sometimes while reading the helpful writing articles then you'd have some good money for a new server! If you're wondering what type of helpful writing articles I'm talking about see this one I wrote for my own blogger blog: http://jwhpff.blogspot.com/2011/08/improving-your-creative-writing-skill.html HPFF already has a huge list of these artilces written by their administrators, and it would be great if we had something like that too. - JAWorley on 17 Aug 2011 7:20 am
JAWorley, This was an idea I was thinking about as well. I'll set the blog tonight.Don't expect a great design yet. I'm still learning to make themes. I could have had it as a subdomain for Potions and Snitches, which was the original idea. But the site needs all the server attention it can get, until we decide what to do about moving. In the mean time, I'll set the blog up tonight at http://www.alandrem.net/potions-snitches/ This blog will located at another server, where I have my personal account. This is to avoid affecting Potions and Snitches performance. It'll be experimental to see how many people are interested in helping. Anyone wanting to join the community is welcome. It's a WordPress blog, like the one for my personal sites. http://www.iycorner.net (my stories and plot bunnies are slowly making their way into this blog before I post them anywhere else), and http://www.alandrem.net (Not much here except an occasional rant). I also crosspost everything to my LiveJournal. animealam - animealam on 19 Aug 2011 5:46 am
Sounds great. Blogger.com has some really great templates that are super easy to use. I've never had much luck with Word Press but I've done pretty well on Blogger. Here's another one of my personal blogs on Blogger for you to see an example: http://christianbiblestudyblog.blogspot.com/
You know, I'm jobless right now and school-less, and have time to set things like that up. I can set something up for you on Blogger and then turn it over to you to host on your own domain if you want. Just let me know.
Also, if you see a theme on this site http://www.premiumbloggertemplates.com/ that you like I can put that on a blogger blog for you and get it set up. Send me an e-mail if you want to work something like that out. I'd be glad to help! - JAWorley on 19 Aug 2011 5:35 pm
You could make a contest for donations. So many dollars gets your name in the hat for someone to write a story with your challenge. See how many authors would be willing to donate a story to a winner maybe have more than one person win then. Might get people to donate if they have a chance to read a story they've always wanted to read. plus its like a fanfic contest lol

I also think selling merchendise on zazzle.com is a great idea... stuff with the name Potions and Snitches on it. Then the site gets some money and the ppl get some great merchendise! Again to the admin, I can set that all up for you and make the designs at no charge whatsoever... it will be my contribution to the group.

I've been reading on this site since it's creation... I'd definitely donate some :)

I also read fanfiction on my Android mobile during breaks and I would certainly be willing to pay for the app. Of course I am also ready to donate, although I cannot really afford much at the moment ^_^ - Tsuby on 12 Sep 2011 9:27 pm
Donations and ads. My opinion.
