I have been writing fan fiction for years, mostly in my head. Lately inspired to share. I love Severus fics--I have a lot of sympathy for beleaguered schoolteachers and frustrated researchers. Currently I'm a mom, an EMT, a hobby farmer, and a writer. In the past I have been a doula, a social worker, a foreign aid worker, and a number of other things. I've decided to start posting notes about my stories on Dreamwidth. At the moment, I am reposting Digging for the Bones over there with extensive authors annotations covering questions I frequently get and also extra stuff.
Instant Owlers: Reviews by Paganaidd
After a series of tests to discover why Harry's magic has become erratic, a secret is revealed, one hidden for over fifteen years. But not all secrets disappear without consequence, leaving Severus to learn that potions cannot heal everything.

Author's Response: Thanks so much, Paganaidd. I know you're in the medical field so that makes your comment mean so much more. I'm glad my research has paid off. :) Petunia Dursley is cleaning the attic and finds a previously unknown copy of Lily’s will. Ecstatic at her discovery, she promptly abandons her burdensome nephew, along with Lily’s will, on the doorstep of her childhood nemesis (aka, Severus Snape). ***FULLY UPDATED IN JAN 2013 IN PREPARATION FOR THE UPCOMING SEUQUEL***

I'm hoping Harry doesn't have to leave.
Anyway, this was very sweet and sad. I'm sniffling.
Thanks for sharing. Cauldron’s bubbled. Potions simmered. And Snape was yelling at Neville again. Just another ordinary day in Potions class, or so they all thought. When a potion reveals something out of the ordinary, Harry’s life is changed forever, and not in a positive way. Was it so unreasonable to ask that he be allowed to make it through sixth year like a normal teenager?

Probably, from the outside, it looked like Harry was starting to take an interest in things again (showing up for class etc). The assumption by people who aren't aware of how depression and suicidality can look would be that he was just coming out of it gradually. I also like that Draco gets it when Harry gives him his Firebolt without needing to see the note. The fall from the tower made my stomach turn over. Good catch, Severus! Author's Response: Yeah, I'm a psych major and we learned about this is psychology class, but then also becasue of various campus jobs I've held I was required to take 4 or 5 different suicide prevention seminars. They really covered symptoms well so that we knew what to look out for in other people. Giving away prized possessions, feeling relief once the choice of when and how to do it is made, etc. Thanks for the review.
This is the worst condemnation a person can receive. Bravo for Severus realizing it and deciding to do something before the same could be said of him. This story has really caught me. Excellent work.
Do the students realize that Harry was trying to kill himself? And what would be their reaction? Or perhaps Dumbledore has put out the word that Harry was ill and delirious? Snape loses control and severely injures Harry. Both of them must deal with the consequences. The question is, will they have to deal with them alone, or will they be able to work through them together?

Wondering how Severus is going to stay out of Azkaban. Just one question (because I'm a little obsessive compulsive about these details)It's not clear how long the seizure is; is it one long seizure or several short ones? I wanted to reach in and start assisting the child's breathing myself--a compliment to the amount of tension you built up in the scene. Anyway, I enjoyed it.
I like Dumbledore's implication that Harry will be Severus' responsibility for a very long time. "Assuming he does wake" Brrrrr. On the other hand, Albus is taking a huge gamble. hoping to salvage the situation by having Severus make amends this way is either brilliant or insane. Or both. Looking forward to more! Harry Potter is not a happy child. He carries a danger inside him that manifests itself soon after he arrives at Hogwarts, and it falls to his new Head of House, Severus Snape, to protect Harry, even from himself…

Author's Response: Well, Harry's done remarkable things before... After helping Draco Malfoy escape the abuse of Sirius Black, Harry endures the wrath of his Godfather. When Snape comes looking for Draco, Harry tells him that Draco has run away, and that he won’t tell him where Draco is unless Snape takes Harry with him.
Rated: T - Chapters: 14 - Genres: Angst, Drama, Family, General, Hurt/Comfort - Completed: No Characters: Draco, Dumbledore, Flitwick, Ginny, Hagrid, Hermione, McGonagall, Original Character, Other, Ron, Sirius, Snape and Harry (required) - Warnings: Abusive Dursleys, Character Bashing, Character Death, Corporal Punishment, Drug use, Neglect, Profanity, Runaway, Violence Takes Place: None
And of course, Albus wouldn't see it, cause he's still thinking of Sirius as his student. Maybe a visit from Remus, who's discovered a ranting and raving Sirius? Who is genuinely concerend about Harry? Because he's just figured out how crazy Sirius is? Of course, Harry would assume Remus was trying to take him back to Sirius. So perhaps Harry looks for somewhere safe to hide out in the castle. Like the Chamber of Secrets, maybe?
"And I don't want the world to see me Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am." I usually don't like Abusive!Sirius, but I'm enjoying this very much. I could see Sirius going here in his head. Just being a big ol' bully cause he never learned anything else, having come from an abusive home himself. |
